March 13, 2010

There are several sorts of decorative molds you can create with concrete. Concrete is both durable plus versatile in its ability to be both useful and decorative for out of doors decor. It can hold ornamental objects inside its casting, in addition to be molded into the shape or structure of a simple object, like a leaf. Making leaf molds can enhance the natural appearance of a garden, whereas still bringing out ornamental parts which are distinctive to the homeowner’s style.

Attain a leaf. Be sure it’s a pronounced vein system therefore it will show up within the mold. The scale of the leaf is up to you.

Pile sand or dirt. Onto a table top, pile some dirt or sand into a small mound. Don’t make a mountain, rather an evenly piled mound of sand or dirt. Then cover the pile with a plastic trash bag.

Set the leaf. Set the leaf face down onto the pile so the backside of the leaf is facing upwards.

Cut the chicken wire. Pre-cut the chicken wire to the approximate form and size of the leaf.

Combine the concrete. Follow the directions on the back of the package for mixing the concrete.

Apply the concrete. Apply a skinny layer of concrete mix onto the rear of the leaf.

Set the chicken wire. Place the chicken wire on the back of the leaf onto the concrete.

Add another layer. Apply another skinny layer of concrete. Smooth out the edges.

Let it dry. Dry the concrete, making sure to not let it dry too quickly as it will cause breaking. If below hot conditions, mist sometimes along with a spray bottle. When finished drying, peel off the leaf to reveal the concrete mold.

Now you can obtain a whole kit or package which includes everything required to make hundreds or thousands of feet of stone, pavers, tile, etc., aside from the water plus concrete.  Included is colorant, additives, mold release, sealer, and of course the molds needed.  Concrete molds for rocks, driveways, patios, walks, floors, walls, swimming pools, fireplaces, the garden, stone home siding, pavers, brick, tile, Most mixable rubbers smell terrible and could cause coughing fits, wear a respirator or learn to hold your breath when mixing them.
